Besides its historical and cultural heritage the city of Gondar is the traditional jumping off point for hikkers aiming at exploring the Semien Mountains National Park. The Park, established in 1959, can be reached from the city of Debark, about ninety kms north of Gondar. The Park features the second highest peak in Africa, the Ras Dashen and it is home to a great variety of flora and fauna, including endemic species such as the walia ibex and the Simen fox.

Gondar is connected by daily flights with Ethiopia’s capital Addis Abeba, which are served by Ethiopian Airlines. Gondar is also well connected by asphalt roads to Amhara Region’s main capital, as well as to the Sudanese border.
